The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) launch a special appeal to the authorities to re-open the investigation into the murder of investigative journalist Vieranika Charkasava.
"The IFJ believes that the continued failure to prosecute Charkasava’s killers is a stain on the image of Belarus and the readiness of the Belarus government to defend basic human rights. By finding Charkasava’s killers and bringing them to trial, Belarus can demonstrate to its citizens and the international community that it supports press freedom and is prepared to defend the lives of journalists." World Association of Newspapers has called on the government of Belarus to end the
harassment of journalists and the repression of press freedom. 2006-06-08

Belarus." [read full text...]
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL: Anton Filimonov - Concern for ill-health of minor in detention
2004-03-07
Amnesty International is concerned for the welfare of Anton Filimonov, aged 16, currently being held in a prison in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. Anton Filimonov has heart and kidney problems, and Amnesty International is concerned that further detention in the absence of appropriate medical treatment will seriously affect his health. The organization is also concerned that his arrest may be a pretext and that the real reason for his detention is to pressurize him into confessing to the murder of his mother or to force him to incriminate other relatives, and that he may be being subjected to psychological pressure and ill-treatment while in detention.

ANTON FILIMONAU'S RELATIVES MADE A PUBLIC APPEAL 2006-02-02
Anton Filimonov (Veronika Cherkasova's son) has spent a month in the confinement cell. During this period there has not been a single investigation of his case (money forgery). The public appeal was made by Diana Cherkasova and Vladimir Meleshko - Anton's grand-parents. They draw attention to the fact that the youth is the only one of all the suspects that is still detained. During this time he lost 7 kilos (15 pounds) that can lead to "irreversible consequences and even to disability" because he has heart and kidney problems. Moreover, Anton's relatives say that the police admitted that some people who were not connected with his case were allowed to visit Anton in the confinement cell. [text of the appeal...]
